In a remarkable demonstration of environmental responsibility and collective action, Marriott India has successfully achieved its ambitious commitment to plant 125,000 trees across its portfolio of more than 200 hotels nationwide on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026.
The milestone further strengthens Marriott India’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and ecological conservation, while building upon the extraordinary success of last year’s initiative that saw the company plant 100,000 trees across India.
This year, Marriott India elevated its environmental commitment through its enhanced “Four Trees Per Room” initiative, a significant step forward in its journey towards creating measurable environmental impact. With a portfolio exceeding 30,000 rooms, the campaign reflected Marriott India’s belief that meaningful change begins with collective responsibility and consistent action.
The initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from associates across the country, with 7,713 Marriott associates contributing more than 21,000 volunteer hours towards tree plantation drives and environmental conservation activities. The large-scale effort united hotel teams, community partners, environmental organisations, NGOs, and local authorities in a shared mission to restore green cover and support biodiversity.
Tree plantation activities were conducted across multiple cities and regions throughout India, focusing on restoring ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, supporting climate resilience, and creating long-term environmental benefits for local communities.
Speaking on the achievement, Sanjay Gupta, Chairman, Marriott India Business Council, said:
“At Marriott India, sustainability is not simply an initiative—it is a responsibility that is deeply embedded in how we operate and engage with our communities. Following the achievement of planting 100,000 trees last year, we challenged ourselves to go even further through our Four Trees Per Room commitment. The enthusiastic participation of our associates and hotels across the country reflects our collective commitment to environmental stewardship. Together, we are creating a greener future while contributing meaningfully to the well-being of our communities and the planet.”
Goa Hotels Join the Green Movement
Among the many participating properties, Le Méridien Goa, Calangute, reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability through a meaningful community-driven plantation initiative.
Leading the effort was Babita Kanwar, who joined fellow Marriott General Managers and hotel associates at Kripa Foundation for a special sapling distribution and plantation drive.
As part of the initiative:
- 150 saplings were donated to Kripa Foundation, Anjuna, supporting the foundation’s efforts to create greener and more healing spaces for individuals on their recovery journey.
- 60 saplings were distributed among hotel associates, encouraging personal participation in sustainability efforts.
- 20 saplings were shared with neighbouring residents around the hotel.
- 10 saplings were donated to W.A.G..
In total, 240 saplings were distributed within the local community, demonstrating how environmental action can create a ripple effect far beyond hotel boundaries.
Beyond Tree Plantations
While tree planting remains a flagship initiative, Marriott India’s sustainability journey extends well beyond a single annual campaign.
Across its extensive portfolio, the company continues to implement a wide range of responsible hospitality practices, including:
- Energy-efficient hotel operations
- Water conservation initiatives
- Waste reduction and recycling programmes
- Sustainable sourcing practices
- Community-led environmental projects
- Biodiversity conservation efforts
These initiatives align with Marriott International’s broader sustainability goals and reinforce the company’s commitment to creating long-term positive impact for future generations.
Hospitality with Purpose
As environmental concerns continue to shape the future of global travel and hospitality, Marriott India’s achievement serves as a powerful example of how large hospitality organisations can leverage their scale to create meaningful change.
By planting 125,000 trees, engaging thousands of associates, and fostering partnerships with local communities, Marriott India has once again demonstrated that sustainability is not merely a corporate objective—it is a shared responsibility and an integral part of hospitality’s future.
For an industry built on caring for people and places, Marriott India’s World Environment Day 2026 initiative is a reminder that every tree planted today contributes to a greener, healthier, and more resilient tomorrow.
